Microsoft Surface Go launched, set to compete with iPad

Microsoft recently announced the launch of Microsoft Surface Go, its latest hybrid tablet and 2-in-1 detachable notebook in the Microsoft Surface product offering. Microsoft regards Surface Go as the lightest, portable and affordable Surface product yet. Surface Go shares similarity with the latest Surface Pro (2017) hybrid tablet in the look, functionality (sleek laptop, tablet portability with amazing touchscreen), built-in kickstand, and also on the display front with PixelSense Display technology.

Surface Go stands out as the narrower and budget-friendly version of Surface Pro. While, Surface Pro is equipped with a high-end 7th generation Intel Core series processor, but on the other hand Surface Go has Intel Pentium Gold Processor 4415Y. Surface Go is equipped with 4GB RAM and 64 GB (eMMC drive) variant and another one with 8GB RAM and 128 GB SSD. Surface Pro surpasses Surface Go in the memory and storage front by offering 4GB, 8GB or 16GB RAM variants along with SSD storage options: 128GB, 256GB, 512GB or 1TB.

Microsoft Surface Go Price and Availability

Microsoft Surface Go with Intel Pentium Gold Processor 4415Y and 4 GB RAM/64 GB storage is offered at a price at USD 399 (approx Rs. 27,250 ) and Microsoft is already accepting pre-orders at its website. Surface Go will go on sale (with shipments) starting from 2nd August 2018 onwards. Surface Go top-end variant with 8 GB RAM/128 GB SSD storage is priced at USD 549 (approx Rs. 37,500).

Surface Go will be available for pre-order from July 10th onwards in the following countries, according to Microsoft blog post: US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, UK, Ireland, France, Germany, Austria, Belgium, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Switzerland, Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Poland, Italy, Portugal, and Spain. It is also to be noted that Surface Go accessories to be bought separately. Surface Go Signature Type Cover is priced at USD 129.99 (approx 8,880), Surface Pen is priced at USD 99 (approx Rs. 6,750) and Surface mobile mouse price is set at USD 34.99 (approx Rs. 2,380). Additionally, Microsoft Complete for Surface Go offers extended protection for the device and that also includes accidental damage coverage for a period of two years on software and hardware front.

Moreover, in the coming weeks, Surface Go will be available in other countries and pre-order will continue in Japan, Singapore, Korea, Taiwan, Malaysia, Thailand, Hong Kong, China and other markets.

Microsoft Surface Go Specifications and Features:

It comes with a 10-inch PixelSense display, 3:2 aspect ratio, 1500:1 contrast ratio, 10-point multi-touch and screen resolution of 1800 x 1200 pixels with 217 ppi. Corning Gorilla Glass 3 provides protection for the display screen. Surface Go’s exterior has Magnesium casing with a silver color offering. On the camera front, Surface Go features an 8 MP rear-facing camera with autofocus capability and support of 1080 pixels for HD video recording. There is also a 5 MP front-facing camera with 1080 pixels for HD video (Skype). Windows Hello face authentication using front-facing camera does face recognition.

Surface Go runs Windows 10 OS in S mode. Also, there is support for Microsoft Office 365 Home 30-day trial. Windows 10 in S mode provides a productive Windows experience while keeping security and performance in check. Only apps from the Microsoft store and browsing with Microsoft Edge browser are allowed.

Surface Go is driven by dual-core Intel Pentium Gold 4415Y processor with a processing speed of 1.6 GHz. Intel HD Graphics 615 GPU pushes graphics crunching. From the storage viewpoint, while Surface Go supports RAM size of 4 GB with an internal storage size of 64 GB (eMMC drive), and another variant with 8 GB RAM and internal storage size of 128 GB SSD. On the battery front, Surface Go is powered up to offer up to 9 hours of video playback. In the blog post by Panos Panay, Chief Product Officer at Microsoft, he informed that Surface Go will be Wi-Fi only for this upcoming sale and a 4G LTE variant will be going to be launched later this year.

On connectivity technologies dimension, Surface Go supports Wi-Fi: IEEE 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 4.1. On the audio front, 2W stereo speakers with Dolby Audio Premium and a single microphone are provided. Regarding connectivity support, USB Type C is used to charge the tablet or for data transfer to external devices, Surface Connect port for charging and connecting to a desktop dock, Surface Type Cover port, microSDXC card reader are provided. With regard to sensors, it includes Ambient light, Accelerometer, Gyroscope, and Magnetometer. Surface Go dimensions include 245 mm x 175 mm x 8.30 mm and weigh 522 g or 1.15 lbs (not including Type Cover).
